The Launch of Myer Giftorium

$

Last week we were thrilled to head up the highway to attend the opening of Myer's new Christmas Giftorium. With entertainment, beautiful gift-wrapping, product customisation and a big emphasis on customer service, the concept is all about injecting theatre back into the 'traditional' Christmas shopping experience. Rolled out into all 67 Myer stores nationally (including Geelong), the Giftorium is set to make us anticipate Christmas more special than ever.
There was a lovely vibe in store - and it came down to the friendly staff, as well as the carefully-thought out installations designed to engage little ones and inspire their parents. My boys loved having their faces painted, balloon animals made, magic tricks performed in front of them and chilling out on bean bags to watch Frozen. All this before they were let loose in the massive toy sections...
Both of these toys came home with us for less than $30!
In a world first, Sodastream PLAY has rolled out a customisation service in the Myer Melbourne store.  You can personalise your unit by choosing different colour pieces, which are then put together in front of you. Sodastream very generously gave me my very own unit (wow!)…my yellow and grey masterpiece has been given a work out in our kitchen all weekend!
Myer, thanks for having us. We look forward to visiting again when we're in proper Christmas shopping mode!

New In Town: The Arrival Of A New Bambini

Geelong is blessed with many great childcare centres, so we're really lucky that Bambini Early Learning has chosen to open a centre in Newtown early next year. With 92 long daycare places for children aged 3 months to 5 years, the centre will also offer 3 & 4 year old kindergarten programs.
About Bambini Early Learning Centres
Bambini is a group of boutique childcare centres operated by Carla Atkin.  It already has two established centres in Brighton, and in January (along with Newtown) it will also open a facility at The Royal Childrens Hospital.

The Newtown centre is at 89 Aphrasia St, and it will be open from 7.30-6pm Mon-Fri, 50 weeks a year. It will have 8 rooms and its facilities will include 2 full-time chefs focussed on preparing organic produce, as well as an art teacher and art studio.

The Bambini Early Learning Centre Philosophy
The centre is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to learning. It values children as strong, resilient and full of curiosity. Some of its principles are:
- Children are driven to learn by exploring their interests and ideas. They develop knowledge, curiosity, imagination and independent thinking through involvement in small and large groups, in project based learning.
- Children use 'a hundred languages' - that is, many different ways to show their understanding and express their thoughts and creativity. They can do this through drawing, pretend play, music, dance and sculpting and lots of other creative outlets.
- Teachers are guides and mentors, and Bambini Early Learning Centre takes a child-led approach to learning. Activities and projects emerge based on children's interests.
- The environment is the 'third teacher'. The centre places special focus on educating children, families and teachers on adopting environmentally-friendly practices.
- Promoting and demonstrating a healthy nutritional diet will promote positive life-long eating patterns.

Local + Lovely: Frankie Say Relax

We're thrilled to interview Bec & Bianca of Geelong's stylish new homewares store, Frankie Say Relax. Since launching earlier this year, the two mums have been steadily growing their online business (they have the coolest Instagram account - check it out @_frankiesayrelax). We're excited with the news that they'll soon open a retail store next to King Of The Castle in Pakington St. Here's our chat - Janet

Bec and Bianca, tell us about yourselves.
We've been friends for 15 years now. Bianca grew up in Ocean Grove, and completed a Diploma of Visual Arts at the Gordon, which is where she discovered her love of photography. In between motherhood and building a number of custom family homes in the region, Bianca also works as a freelance photographer specialising in food and lifestyle. Bianca currently lives in Ocean Grove with her partner and 2 children.

Bec is a born and bred Geelong girl. After graduating from Sacred Heart, Bec travelled and worked around Australia, Asia and Europe for four years. Upon her return, she met her future husband and together they bought their first home in Belmont. Since then, they've survived two renovations and are currently in the midst of tackling a Modernist home renovation. Bec has four children and is studying Interior Design at The Gordon.

Tell us about your career histories - what led you to starting Frankie Say Relax?
Bianca: I've worked alongside the Golden Plate Awards for 10 years as their official photographer. This has given me the opportunity to build strong relationships with the restaurant and food industry in Geelong and regional Victoria. I've spent the last 3 years photographing travel and culinary lifestyle books for Smudge Publishing and have worked for many notable clients including Lakehouse in Daylesford and Andrew McConnells’s collection of restaurants. My most recent project was photographing 120 cafes around Melbourne and surrounds for the Speciality Coffee Book Victoria, which has just been released to rave reviews. Opening a homewares store has always been on my ‘bucket list’ and I've been looking for something closer to home that would still make use of my photography skills.
Bec:  I've had a varied and extensive work history! I've worked in the ski industry in Australia and Courchevel, France, worked as a stevedore on the docks of Melbourne, owned and operated an online fashion business and owned a café in Geelong. Most recently I've been working as a freelance colour consultant whilst completing my Interior Design course. Frankie Say Relax was the logical culmination of many years spent renovating and decorating houses and the shared love of stylish homewares and design.
How did you come up with that great name?
We named the business after Bianca’s miniature dachshund Frankie. We are both children of the 80’s and remember the slogan ‘Frankie Say Relax’ and thought that would be a really cool name that people our age could identify with.
What is the store all about?
Frankie Say Relax is, as the name suggests, a relaxed, easy going, friendly, one stop store where customers can access a broad range of homewares and gifts that caters to all budgets. There is a strong emphasis on locally sourced and ethically produced products. We are not afraid to take risks in our product selection and aim to provide an alternative to what is readily available elsewhere. We would love our customers to feel comfortable and relaxed when shopping with us.
How do you select your products?
All of our products are individually sourced. We are building excellent relationships with local makers and artisans but also source Australia wide as well as from around the world. We basically just stock products that we love. Our judgment is based on the aesthetic, craftsmanship and individual detail of each item.

    What is your best-selling item?
We have been overwhelmed with the success of our online store. We have already had many repeat customers and have been busy posting products off around Australia. Our own Frankie Say Relax jewellery has sold really well as have some of our locally produced products.
What do you love most about your business?
The best part of owning and running Frankie Say Relax is being able to use our individual creative talents to form a sustainable business which also allows us to enjoy time with our families. We read magazines, blogs and keep up to date with what’s happening on Instagram which is always fun when you have a strong passion for the industry.
We've heard a little whisper that you're going to open a bricks-and-mortar store... can you share any details?
Yes! We are weeks away from opening our doors at 26 Pakington St, Geelong West (next to King Of the Castle cafe). It will be something a little different, something that hasn't seen before in the homewares industry in Geelong. We are both so excited and look forward to meeting and forming relationships with new customers when the shop finally opens...

    Kid-Friendly Dining: Mt Duneed Estate

What: The Barrel Hall at Mt Duneed Estate
Where: 65 Pettavel Road, Waurn Ponds VIC. Phone (03) 52661244
When: Fridays (good for mums groups), Saturday and Sunday 11am - 5.00pm
Why: Mt Duneed Estate is the new name + concept for what was previously 'The Hill'. Launched in July with a relaxed dining space called The Barrel Hall, and new beer and wine ranges, Mt Duneed Estate is suddenly on Geelong's radar.
In particular, it seems to be gathering momentum as a hangout for local families. Why? I think it has to do with the child-friendly atmosphere and the enormous amount of space on offer. It has parlour games (giant Jenga anyone?) a sandpit and lots of room for kids to do their thing while giving their parents space to eat lunch in peace. Which is always a win/win.
    Pics by Hails + Shine.

On the menu:The menu favours local produce, and is quite share-plate oriented. Certainly seems to match well with the wines on offer. We had Salt + Pepper Sichuan calamari ($17), the Vigneron's Platter to share ($32. I did have food envy though when I saw the Quinoa Salad. Next time. View the menu here
Kids menu: Quite a few options. Our kids had Fish + Chips and Penne Bolognaise ($12 each, with a scoop of ice-cream afterward).
    High chair situation:Yes
The parking situation: Definitely not a problem here! You will not be able to get here any other way.
Good things to know: Mt Duneed Estate has a big lawn area out the front and kids can't seem to resist a good run-around. Inside, kids can also borrow the colouring books and pencils, play in the sandpit, with the hookie etc. The giant Jenga is great, but the pieces are quite heavy… best to keep little kids clear and supervise older kids

Plan your trip - there are lots of great boozy options (including the new Pettavel Road craft beers). Someone has to be the designated driver! There is a word that a new beer garden is to be opened soon, adding another space to hang out.
It only takes 10-15 minutes to get to Mt Duneed Estate from Geelong (its just behind Waurn Ponds). There are roadworks on the highway, which means that it has gone down to one lane in either direction. Don't forget and drive out of Pettavel Road into oncoming traffic!
And finally, they've just opened on Fridays - it's perfect for a mothers group catchup. No need to stress about screaming babies or tantruming toddlers because everyone else there is in the same boat!

    Local + Lovely: dear mabel

Geelong West is fast becoming home to a throng of adorable pop-up stores. From caravans (The Itty Bitty Book Van) to shipping containers (Frankie Say Relax) to breathing new life into established buildings, the suburb is fast becoming a haunt for transient shopping. Here, Geelong West local Kerri Bennett introduces us to the Christmas store of dear mabel.
For crafty duo Samantha and Glenn Hair, it's hard to believe that it has been only 12 months since launching their uber cute brand, dear mabel. Since November 2013, dear mabel has developed a local cult-like following, helping the market stall business grow into a bricks-and-mortar Christmas pop-up shop in Elizabeth St, Geelong West.
dear mabel began with Samantha and Glenn's passion for creating beautiful gift wrapping, unique table settings, party styling and original stationery. While the couple both worked full-time jobs in other fields (and still do), they found that crafting and styling gave them a shared creative outlet.

And why the name dear mabel? Growing up, Samantha and her grandmother Mabel exchanged postcards. Their regular exchange of words ignited Samantha's love of writing and stationery, and dear mabel pays tribute to her much loved grandmother. The brand has now extended beyond stationery to hand stitched fair-trade felt ball garlands, bespoke timber Christmas ornaments, locally printed and designed gift tags and recycled kraft cardstock bunting.
Dear mabel's Christmas pop-up shop is located at 32 Elizabeth St, which must be one of Geelong West’s cutest historic buildings. Samantha says they had always admired the building, which is usually occupied by Lorraine Shaw Milinery. When scouting store locations, they were utterly delighted to find that it was available.
Today, the dear mabel pop-up shop is a Christmas wonderland. It ranges a wide range of themed crafts as well as offering creative ideas for gifts, events and even Christmas styling workshops. Follow dear mabel on Instagram or Facebook for opening times and to keep up with their news.

Geelong Mums 'Rise + Shine Baby' Campaign

Looking for a Christmas gift that also helps to bring some joy to disadvantaged local families? Look no further than Geelong Mum's Rise And Shine Baby initiative.

    The Campaign
Did you know that last year 20,000 people in Geelong experienced food insecurity - meaning that they didn't have enough money to put enough food on the table? For local Geelong families in need, having essentials like a safe cot for their baby to sleep in is often financially out of reach, meaning parents are often forced to use unsafe equipment or even go without.

Geelong Mums is a charity that provides emergency relief baby equipment to more than 20 local families every week. It has launched the Rise And Shine Baby campaign to raise funds to buy new cots and bedding for the babies of Geelong's disadvantaged families.

Geelong Mums General Manager Kate Kent says that the organisation finds it difficult to meet demand for these items. “Sourcing high quality pre-loved cots is tough as they must meet strict Australian standards, and often pre-loved cots do not meet these standards due to being too old or in very poor condition.” Hence the need to raise funds

    An Excellent Christmas Gift
Geelong Mums has collaborated with new local skin care company Evergreen Australia to produce a limited edition, hand-poured soy candle. Each candle is infused with botanical oils and the “Otway Rainforest” scent, in a nod to our region's beautiful natural environment. Each gift-boxed candle costs $25, and 100% of the profit goes to the Rise And Shine Baby! campaign.

    Where To Buy
Candles can be purchased from Ampersand - 1/138 Pakington St, Geelong West, or online at www.geelongmums.bigcartel.com.

    Review: Newa Rejuvenation System

    $
    0
    0
First up, this post isn't one of our 'usual' posts. Mama Geelong hasn't suddenly turned into a beauty blog. And we prefer to focus on other people in our community (certainly not me!). But a little while ago, I received an invitation to attend the launch of Homedic's Newa - an innovative new beauty product - at the Botanical Hotel in South Yarra. I was chuffed that this little blog was considered worthy of an invitation to a beauty launch, so off I went. I caught up with several Melbourne bloggers I follow, made some new friends and had a cheeky wine with lunch. The luxury! Janet.

    So now, on to Newa.

    GETTING OLDER
One of the signs of ageing is a gradual loss of skin elasticity, and a natural loss of skin collagen production. This causes the skin to look and feel looser, and makes it susceptible to fine lines and wrinkles. The latest professional response to this is radio frequency technology (RF). Essentially, RF energy stimulates the skin's natural ability to produce collagen. In a salon, it costs around $150 per treatment, with 12 treatments required at weekly intervals to see marked results. (And apparently, the difference is very noticeable).

    NEWA

Newa is a hand-held device that can be used at home, with clinically-proven results (an average of 36% wrinkle reduction after 12 weeks!). The only difference is the cost ($499), and the reliance on your own commitment to using it.

    HOW NEWA WORKS
Homedics says that Newa works by "delivering energy 3 layers deep into your skin, reactivating the natural collagen producing process. Nothing else can do this - no cream can reach these cells and fillers and chemicals canʼt achieve this".

Newa looks like an electric shaver (and the action of using it reminds me of it too). It requires the application of an activator gel and then rubbing the device in a circular fashion around each target facial area. The applicator does impart a bit of redness as each skin area is treated, but it subsides quickly.
The Newa can be used on the cheeks and neck (and not between the eyes, where I really need wrinkle-fixing!). Each area takes 4 minutes, with 24 minutes required to treat the whole face.

    MY THOUGHTS
I like it! After each treatment, my skin has felt tighter, plumper, and also temporarily flushed. It is undeniably immediate in terms of making skin feel as though it has had 'something' done to it (in a good way!). Skin feels soft, massaged and almost as though it has had a facial.

I am not particularly good at sticking to routines, and I've found that I've skipped days or skipped treatment areas. As the mum of twin toddlers, I find it hard to put regularly put aside 24 whole minutes. However after two weeks, I can definitely see that my target areas (smile lines and neck skin) are showing signs of tightening up. I look forward to posting a follow-up review on this in January - hopefully there will be a definitive difference! I certainly wouldn't mind a 36% reduction in wrinkles!

    WHERE TO BUY
Newa is available from The Shaver Shop for $499, including the Activator gel (individually, the gel costs $59.95). Whilst this does seem like an expensive outlay, if compared to salon treatments it is actually very cost-effective.

I really like that Newa stands behind this product. If after 60 days you do not experience good results, Newa will take back your device with a money back guarantee. Which again, makes the unit worth a look if you're considering skin-tightening treatments.

Guest Post: Summer By A Fresh Legacy

Over the next couple of months, why not  pack a picnic, eat outside and take the kids berry picking? Our region has so much glorious fresh Summer produce to enjoy! Kyrstie Barcak from local blog A Fresh Legacy has dropped by with some lovely tips and recipes.

    Summer Produce To Buy

Now is the time to shop for berries, capsicum, cucumber, figs, grapes, melons, passionfruit, tomatoes, stone fruit and zucchini.

    Berry Picking

If you are not growing your own berries you may consider taking the kids top one of this region's berry farms to pick your own. We go each year prior to Christmas because it is a little less busy and it also means that we do not miss out!

    Try these farms:
    Summer Sensations– Teesdale
There are also others listed via Pick Your  Own

I like to pick as much as possible so that I have enough to freeze for baking later in the year. I also make up batches of jam, ice cream and sorbet. The kids also enjoy fruit leathers made from a mixture of berries and stone fruit.

    Seasonal Food for Sharing:

During the summer months we like to spend a lot of time outdoors, we eat on the deck, have picnics and visit the beach often.
Here are a few of our favourite picnic food ideas to share over the holidays with friends, or when out and about with the family:

    About Kyrstie
Kyrstie Barcak lives in the Geelong area and is mum to two little boys aged 6 and 3 years old.
Kyrstie is passionate about growing and cooking fresh food.  She is slowly taking over the family’s backyard, planting as many vegetables as possible in the available space.  When there is not enough to eat from the garden she supports local farmers and businesses.

Kid-Friendly Dining: Flying Brick Cider Co

    What: Flying Brick Cider Co
    Where: 1251–1269 Bellarine Hwy, Wallington VIC 3222 Australia PH: +61 3 5250 6577
    When: 7 days a week from 10am - 5.00pm
Why: This is a brand new venue in Wallington, located across the road from Adventure Park. It's a large, airy building set among vines & a large green lawn - great for families or large groups. The building design is unique, featuring a stunning wooden panelled wooden roof, so there's plenty to take in as you dine.  While the restaurant is primarily a tribute to the company's cider range (even the food is apparently designed to match its range), it also showcases other local Bellarine fare, including Yes Said The Seal wines and Spank! provedore. There's a Flying Brick Cider Co store, offering samples, product and merchandise. It's definitely worth a visit, especially if you're combining it with a trip to Adventure Park or the beach.

On the menu: The menu is split into oysters, small plates, bigger plates, as well as sides and desserts. On the day we visited, we were child free (unheard of!) so we were able to take things at a leisurely pace. A good thing, because the service was a bit tentative and slow… but to be fair, they've only been open 2 weeks and it's the week of Christmas - the venue was packed.
    We shared:
    - Duck Croquettes ($17) - amazing! It was served with a terrific beetroot relish
    - Fried Cauliflower ($10) - interesting and quite yum (also made us feel virtuous as they weren't chips)
    - Roast Mushrooms + Quinoa ($16) - ok, but the mushrooms were a bit chewy
-Twice-cooked Pumpkin Souffle with Drysdale goats curd and Lonsdale tomatoes ($18) - INCREDIBLE. This dish was a standout, and I'd personally come back for it alone.
Larger share plates include a whole char grilled chicken or slow cooked lamb shoulder (both $49).
Booze options: Many! Try a tasting paddle of 4 ciders for $12, or individual ciders in small ($5) or large ($8) sizes. There's a wide range of local wines from Leura Park, Jack Rabbit and Oakdene, plus a basic beer range. Coffee is by Julius Meinl and there's a good range of T2 teas (all $4).
Kids menu: Four options, all $12 and served with chips: Chicken Drumettes, Mini Steak, Calamari. Movenpick ice-cream is $5.
High chair situation: Yes, spotted 3 Ikea chairs
The parking situation: Well-signed and close to the venue.
Good things to know: There's live music booked each week, and that lawn is perfect for kids to run around on. Be prepared on those super hot days when Adventure Park is packed to the brim - this place will be jumping, so expect a wait. The venue is closed Good Friday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Given the focus on alcohol here, please make sure you know who's driving! There is a stop near by on the Geelong to Queenscliff bus route - click here to find the timetable

    Kids Class: Homegrown Music

If you're interested in childrens' music lessons, Homegrown Music is certainly worth considering. Its principal Robyn Hodge, is one of those people best described as effervescent. She's friendly, inquisitive and very passionate about sharing her love of music... we couldn't help but become enthusiastic about it too! Here's our chat.

    Robyn, tell us about yourself.
Well, I’m married to Christopher and we have Abby, 8, and Zoe, 3. I’m originally from East Gippsland, and I moved to Geelong in 1997 soon after returning from a two year volunteer stint in South Africa to work with McKillop Family Services. In the 17 years since I've worked in Geelong's youth, community and church sector, taught keyboard and directed community choirs, and got a BA in politics at Deakin.

    What is your career story?
Throughout my schooling I was lucky to have some truly inspirational teachers who had us singing all the time - all of them were imbued with a happiness and a joy for life that was contagious! After High School I worked in a music store and trained as a teacher in the Yamaha system. I really appreciated the privilege of introducing students to the amazing world of music making. I sang in a Madrigal choir, I went to my first Port Fairy Folk Festivals, I learned swing dance in Geelong and sacred circle dance in Johannesburg. I learned to lead community choirs and when Abby was 2, I discovered Kindermusik. When our teacher left the area, she suggested I look into training as a Kindermusik Educator, and Homegrown Music was born soon after Zoe arrived in 2011.

Tell us about it - what are its benefits?
Homegrown Music is a micro music studio with a purpose to "nurture music for life" through several offerings. My role is that of a facilitator and educator, and I focus mainly on teaching the brilliant Kindermusik program - music and movement for babies through to 7 year olds. I also offer group and private tuition in keyboard and ukulele for children and adults alike.
Music connects with our bodies, our thoughts and emotions, it offers a multi-sensory learning experience and it can help young children learn to regulate their emotions. It’s great for nurturing early literacy and helping kids make meaning from what they hear.
There are many small rituals created in each Kindermusik class that parents can use and adapt for home - singing to and acknowledging each child at the beginning of each class, and asking for their ideas which builds their self confidence. Singing our way through each transition as we put away an instrument or prop, understanding that something else is coming next, cuddling together at the end of class before we sing goodbye to each other. Our approach in class is child-centred, and we'll often adapt an activity to include movements suggested by the children themselves.
Learning an instrument primes our brain for learning in all spheres, not just in music. The other great benefit of children participating in Homegrown Music's Kindermusik program is that if children go on to formal instrumental music tuition, they progress quickly in their lessons, saving time and money.

Can you share a story about when your program has really made a difference to a child/family?
Several Kindermusik parents with very shy, reticent children have been thrilled at the way their children have become confident participants in their Kindermusik class. I'm careful to honour the temperament of each child and to not be too "in your face" with children who are obviously shy, letting them join in at their own pace, in their own time, and reassuring parents that there's no pressure on the children to play with an instrument or prop in a specific way.

What do you hope to achieve with your business this year?
I want to make the world a better place! I reckon mothers have the biggest impact on a person's primal beliefs about life. Those early experiences we give our children will determine whether they approach the world with love and curiosity, or with fear and suspicion, and music can be a powerful tool for parents to create safe and loving spaces that encourage children to learn. So I want to help parents do that.

Local + Lovely: Nerida Hansen Print & Textiles

We love meeting and sharing the stories of local mums who are forging their own paths, especially after having kids. Barwon Heads-based textile specialist, Nerida Hansen, is no exception. Here's our chat.
    Tell us about yourself, Nerida.
I was born and bred in the Geelong region, and live in Barwon Heads with my Danish husband Morten and two children. Before they came along, I spent many seasons in Europe - particularly in Scandinavia - where my love of Scandinavian prints and textiles was born.

What led you to start your own business?
I recently finished my job as a buyer, where I developed ranges for kids and teens bed linen. Having had my own wholesale clothing label before, I was itching to have the freedom and flexibility of my own business so I could work around my children's needs.
When I left my full time role, I started my business creating cushions and bench seat cushions for my husband's customers. (Morten runs the IKEA delivery business Big Swedish Store Run which operates around Geelong, Bellarine and Surfcoast). My new creative outlet lead me to some amazing overseas textile designers. I soon realised these artists had great potential here in Australia, so decided to expand my business and work as a design agent. I am now using my buying and wholesale experience together in Nerida Hansen Print and Textiles.

Tell us what Nerida Hansen Print and Textiles is all about.
My business is both a brand licensing agency and online retailer. I have just launched our online store at www.neridahansen.com.au, where I sell a range of products in our beautiful designs. I currently sell wall prints, cushions, floor cushions, tote bags and purses through our website, as well as in gorgeous stockists.

I strive to promote independent artists, and my business model is based around paying every artist for every piece of work that sells. whether it be an entire bed linen collection to a big retailer, or from one single wall print through the online store.

I've had quick success in placing some of my designers textile designs with key retailers, and continue to do so as I offer their artwork and designs in my own online store. Last week I celebrated the release of the Isa Form range of Swedish Fabric into Spotlight stores - Isa is one of my designers from Sweden and we are thrilled to have her gorgeous designs on sale to the public now.

I have selected my designers part by chance, part by finding talent that I truly admire, and think offers the Australian market something new. My key designers are very talented and successful in their own rights. They love my commercial guidance and I love their amazing creative talents so it works well together.

    And you support local designers?
Yes -  I recently teamed up with Clare O'Donoghuefrom Ocean Grove. This summer we launched her first collection of framed wall prints and vibrant art textiles. The first range of clare's cushions and outdoor textiles sold out as quickly as they came in, so we are really looking forward to developing Clare's brand together. Her framed wall art are often pieces of her most loved canvas artworks, which makes her work accessible and affordable . Her shop is found at www.clareodonoghueart.com
Where do you hope to take the business in 2015?
Between my designers, the online store and our plans to expand into the wholesale market 2015 is going to be a very exciting year. Thankfully I have a wonderful business partner  Linda on board now who is working as hard as I am, but leaves me alone to work with the designers to put ranges together, and allow me the time to get out to beautiful stockists, which are the things I love doing most.

    Wallington Strawberry Fair

Its true. The Wallington Strawberry Fair is the king of primary school fundraisers. Now 31 years old, it seems to have outgrown its beginnings as a humble school fete - it's one of the Bellarine Peninsula's biggest events in its own right. Add it to your diary for Sunday, March 1st!

This year, expect to try homemade strawberry jams, choc-dipped strawberries, strawberries served with pavlova, strawberries and cream, strawberries and pancakes, and Devonshire teas and (yes!) local wines.

There's plenty of entertainment for the whole family including face painting, pony rides, a giant auction, mobile animal patting farm, lucky dips, show bags, poo lotto and a vast array of market stalls. You may even stumble into a flashmob...

Performers include Ethan Karpathy (from the Voice Kids); Tayla Haigh, an amazing local singer/songwriter, who also teaches singing at Wallington Primary and Dazzling Dan the Magic Man.

The Strawberry Fair really is a great day out for the whole family, with something for everyone. There is plenty of off road parking available on the day, and please leave the dog at home, for the best interests of everyone.

A Glimpse Inside Bambini Early Learning Centre

Interested in hearing more about Geelong's new childcare centre, Bambini Early Learning Centre? The Newtown facility has been operating for a couple of months now, and Katelin Blackwell, Lead Educator, gives us a glimpse of life inside the Waratah Room (12-18 months).
This week the children explored shapes and textures when they attended their first art class in our purpose-built art studio. Our art teacher provided some fantastic activities for the children like sticking foam shapes onto sticky paper — a great sensory experience for one-year-olds. The children explored different textures as they squeezed the foam pieces and pressed their fingers onto the sticky paper, enabling them to express their ideas while using a range of media.

To the outdoors... the children explored our natural environments and play experiences. The ball pit is always a popular play space for the children and provides a great area for the children to grow their social skills while enjoying the sunshine.
Inside, the Waratah Room is set up with stimulating experiences that are inviting and of interest to the children. This week we provided a variety of musical instruments for the children to play with, encouraging them to investigate the different sounds they make. We played different types of music for the children as they danced, which helped them to explore movement and spatial awareness.

At Bambini Early Learning Centres we promote positive social experiences for the children, as we all sit together for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. The children grow to enjoy a wide variety of foods made with fresh and organic produced by our chefs. We encourage the children to use cutlery and attempt to feed themselves, helping them to gain and build their independence.

During rest times we close the blinds and play soft, calming music. We ensure each child’s individual routines are met via ongoing consultation with parents. Children are provided their own space to rest comfortably and their comforters from home. Our educators sit with them and gently soothe them to sleep. We remain close by to monitor them and ensure that when they wake, it is a calm and positive transition - ready and refreshed for more fun at Bambini...

    Sustainable Cafe: Little Green Corner

    What: Little Green Corner
Where: 42 Lt Ryrie St, Geelong VIC 3222
    When: 7am - 3.30pm

Why: Little Green Corner opened its doors today, and it is nothing less than a labour of love. Completely dedicated to sustainability, owners Hugh and Claire have cut out as much packaging and waste from their supply chain as possible. This means that sparkling water comes on tap (avoiding bottles), the staff hand make the cafe's almond milk (made from almonds bought at the wholefoods store across the road) and even the eggs come with minimal packaging.

Fare: The space is light and airy with super friendly staff. And while we didn't eat today, the food looks incredible, with fresh, locally-sourced salads a highlight. Little Green Cafe is rolling out an interesting initiative called 'Little Green Farm', referring to the backyards around Geelong that will supply some of its ingredients. They'll share more about it via their Facebook page

Although it has several rooms (and welcomes little ones) Little Green Corner is not a big venue - it's probably best to leave the double pram at home.
We loved that our Oh So herbal tea was served in Pyrex jugs so that, as Hugh pointed out, "you can see the leaves'.
The Verdict: Another winner for our city. It's well worth a visit, and we really wish the team at Little Green Corner every success. It's businesses like these that lead the way toward a greener, better future for us all.

Knowing that plenty of our readers are clever arty/crafty types, last week we headed up the highway to attend the launch of Spotlight's National Craft Month. Held at Luminare in South Melbourne, the event included lots of inspiring ideas, samples, and REALLY friendly Spotlight staff. It was also great to meet and catch up with some of the other bloggers we follow - there really are lots of great people sharing their parenting journeys online these days - at Mama Geelong we find them really helpful (and entertaining!).
March's National Craft Month (NCM) is all about fostering creativity - getting people off their screens and actually making things again.  For parents in particular, this initiative is a great way to gain new ideas for creative activities with their little ones. Every Spotlight store will host activities, displays and feature new products throughout the month. In Geelong, we've got a great Spotlight store in Settlement Road, Belmont.

WHO WANTS TO SHARE IT WITH US?
In the spirit of sharing with the Mama Geelong community, we've got several Spotlight goodies to give away.
The deal? You've got to send us some pics of you enjoying them with your little ones. We'll post them on Facebook and Instagram throughout the month. You must also be able to collect your chosen item from Geelong West.  One item per family, and it's first come, first served.
How to participate: Please email mamageelong@gmail.com with your preferred item, and your address and phone number. We'll coordinate things off line.

We have the following things to share:
    1. A Loom Band Kit and also a Finger Loom Band Kit worth around $20
    2. A Satin Ice cake-decorating kit (including 2 x rolled fondant icing packs, cupcake cases, raspberry flavoured coloring, cake board and recipe). Worth around $30
    3. A Pebeo paint decorating kit - featuring 7 x porcelain, fabric and screen printing paints, a tile and a clear candle holder to decorate. Worth $35 minimum
    4. A 'We R Memory Keepers' flower punch board and flower stem kit - perfect for 3D scrapbooking. Both kits worth $36.95
    5. A Tulip Tie Dye kit and fabric spray worth around $50. (Please note - my twins got into it and unpacked it, so the pieces come separately!)

We recently spoke to Alecia from Green Mumma, the popular local fresh produce delivery service. After two years in business, they've opened a cafe and store in Rippleside, with the aim of making buying certified organic produce affordable, along with providing good old fashioned customer service.

Tell us about Green Mumma HQ
Green Mumma is the business of my husband Shady and I - it's a real family affair. My dad (Pieter) and brother (Conan) are qualified builders and oversaw all aspects of the store construction, using reclaimed materials when possible. The old floorboards from the store we took over were ripped up and used as a feature wall, the old back fence has been used as our front counter and made into feature planter boxes above the fireplace and our front benches are made from old bowling lanes. My mum (Kerry), sister (Sasha), sister-in law (Nadia) and best friend Kylie all work in the store. My other sister-in-law (Linzi) founded Angel Cakes and makes some of our items.

Kids are central to our business. A large blackboard has been installed at the front of the store as well as low bench seating next to it, allowing parents to 'bribe" the kids with a healthy coconut and lime cupcake and let them draw away while they get some shopping in. We also have grand plans for the large backyard which will include a veggie garden and kids yoga classes.. but those are still a few months away yet.

    What do you sell?
We sell certified organic and biodynamic produce, and organic and natural grocery items. We also love supporting other small business and have a range of homewares available from local crafters such asGreenhaus ProjectsThe Planter PodFickle Soy Candle Company and Seagals Jewellery.  We will also be offering a range of workshops including Natural Living Workshops and sugar-free baking workshops which will be facilitated by The Happy Parent Project.

    Tell us about your cafe.
Currently we offer a light lunch and breakfast menu using organic ingredients. We focus on wholesome food and cater for a range of allergies and vegans. Menu options change daily and include smoothies, fruit salad, granola pots, a range of salads, rice paper rolls, vegetable wraps, gluten free rolls and filled bagels. Soups will also be introduced as the weather cools.

For those with a sweet tooth we have a range of raw organic vegan slices and cakes from locals
