New For Surfcoast Kids: Boogie Brain Academy

$

In the 6 months that Rachel Smith has been in Australia, she's already begun contributing to her new community with her business The Boogie Brain Academy, which provides kids drama programs. Based on educational principles, her classes teach babies and pre-schoolers about all kinds of self-expression (and they cost just $5 a class!). Here's our chat.

Tell us a little about yourself
I’m originally from England and married to Garry. We have two children, Morgan 12 and Leah 10. Last September we moved from Ireland to Torquay. It was a big move but a job opportunity for my husband came up and made it possible.  We thought it would be a great life for our children and a wonderful place to live - we have no regrets.

What is the story of your career?
I started teaching in 1994 after doing a Bachelor of Education degree at Sheffield University. I worked as a primary school teacher in Liverpool, Maidenhead and Canada, and in Ireland I worked with children with special needs. After having children I put teaching on hold to focus on raising them, but once my eldest started school I wanted to get back into it. I decided to set up a club in Ireland using a drama program I had used previously. The children really loved it and we always had a great time acting out stories, role-playing, moving to music and bringing their imagination to life.

Tell us about your classes
I started the Boogie Brain Academy company to run educational drama-based programs for babies and pre-school children. I run the Jelly Bean Drama program for 3 – 5 year olds and Sign and Sing program for babies.

Jelly Bean Drama focuses on igniting the imagination and helps children explore and make sense of the world in which they live. During each session the children experience new and imaginary scenarios based on educational cross-curricular topics. The children learn to act out events, become different characters and create simple dramas. Typical topics are Autumn Harvest, Space and the Moon, Jack and the Beanstalk, Time, Pirates, Aesop's Fables, Patterns, Creatures of the Rain Forest, Under the Sea, In the City and The Circus.

During the sessions children are presented with opportunities to develop social skills by being encouraged to share ideas and to cooperate by working together.  In my experience I have learned that role-playing in this way gives children confidence and it’s great to see when children, who are reserved at the start of the term, lose a little bit of self-consciousness each week and start to express themselves. They also have the added benefit of learning something new and different which adds to their own knowledge.

Jelly Bean Drama caters for pre-schools ages and therefore supports key learning outcomes of the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework.  We start with warm-up activities followed by movement games based on the theme of the topic and follow on with the drama program. We end the session with either parachute games or quiet meditation.  Children receive certificates at the end of each topic or theme to show what they have learned and what skills they have achieved.

The Baby Sign and Sing class is for children aged six months to two years. It introduces the very young to signing nursery rhymes and songs. During the thirty minutes every child gets the opportunity to sign, sing and learn other basic signs that can be used at home. The aim is to delight, entertain and teach babies and toddlers how to sign in a fun and stimulating environment. It can help children express themselves and their wishes earlier than they could otherwise by learning everyday words as signs. Parents will go home with information sheets of the signs that they had learned that day.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I find it really rewarding when I see a child who is shy begin to develop the confidence to express themselves in the activities and contribute ideas during the sessions.  I love observing children coming out of their shells, losing themselves in the story and music. I am so happy when parents tell me that after a few weeks of attending the club they can see a difference in their child’s self-confidence or that their social skills have improved. Plus I have to confess I’m a total kid at heart and it’s so liberating to be able to join in with the fun alongside the children and to become a part of their magical world.

Where do you hope to take your business this year?
Well, I have just started running the program here in Torquay and I'm delighted that in April I'll be running it in the new Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre too. Once I have found my feet I would love to run the program in kindergartens because children are so imaginative at that age.

What are your rates?
First session is always free and children can start any time. Sessions are run and paid for termly and you can start at any time during the term.

Local OB Brian McCully's New Book

Popular local obstetrician Brian McCully is a man of many talents... not only has he helped to bring thousands of babies into the world, he's now a published writer. Teaming up with talented Geelong artist Shae Leviston, Brian has penned Why Goldfish Never Die, a philosophical book that explores the meaning of consciousness, awareness and spirit. Read on to the end for your chance to win a copy of the book for you and a friend. And if you'd like to learn more about Brian, click here for an interview we published a while back. Janet

Brian:
I began writing Why Goldfish Never Die in 2010, and have kept at it for much of the time since. The book itself is quite deep…I think….in as much as it explores the question of who we are, of what it means to be alive and more importantly, what it means to know we're alive.
I don't think there is any single correct way to write, I have just simply written from my soul in a way that brings me joy to share.  I have tried to channel the wisdom that I have gained from doing what I do in Medicine, and I have allowed it to flow in whatever form it seems best to take, be that prose or poetry or simple stories.
Shae and I have been sharing our ideas on illustrating the book for just over 3 years now. Shae's illustrations have great gentleness and emotion. In many ways, the pictures help to relax and take away some of the seriousness of reading. The colours and the artwork help to break the book up and provide sign-posts to help people remember spots in the book that they like or that were particularly meaningful for them.
The project has been a delight, and I'm really pleased with the way it has turned out. Thanks for sharing this with the Mama Geelong community.
Shae:

Inspiration for the illustrations has been a wonderful collaborative process between Brian and I over the last few years. As he was writing the book he would give me an initial idea each week and gave me great license to produce whatever came up intuitively for me.
As I was painting quite small I would often work on a few paintings at a time. Ideas would pop into my head and I would just go ahead and paint them for him and they just seemed to fit seamlessly into the narrative he was writing.
It was wonderful to bounce ideas off each other and have fun creating characters and quirky, thoughtful pictures. I produced nearly 80-100 paintings by the time we had finished. Brian put great trust in me and my artwork and I am blessed to have him as one of my biggest fans and as a dear friend.
The project has encouraged me to keep going and produce new work in the form of colouring books.

Build A Bear Workshop

Today we had a blast at the launch of Geelong's own Build A Bear Workshop. The concept is all around customisation - choose a basic model bear (or Disney character etc) and then personalise it with sounds, a heart, outfits and other accessories.
Our boys chose Spongebob Square Pants (complete with 'Let It Go' soundtrack inserted into his head) and a plainish bear pimped up as Spiderman, driving a plastic car. The boys loved it, and I also loved the coincidence that they had both insisted on wearing their Cats vests today, and we then ran into Steve Johnson & Corey Enright.

The store is located on Level 1 of Westfield (near Telstra) and is open from Saturday.

Local + Lovely: Earth Angel Pantry

Claire and Philippa recently launched their delicious local food business, Earth Angel Pantry. After just 6 months, they have already achieved their first year's business goals. And from what we can see, it's down to teamwork, passion and a knack for keeping ahead of the trend for healthy, handmade gourmet food. (Their Happy Cookies are divine!)

Tell us about you and your families, and how you are connected to Geelong?
Claire: I was born and raised in Geelong, and my family still lives in the area. In my early twenties I owned and managed two successful cafés and a restaurant on the Great Ocean Road.
After selling my businesses I travelled extensively throughout Australia before landing in Los Angeles where I helped establish a thriving Australian-style café. Last year I returned to Geelong so that my children could experience an Australian upbringing with their extended family.
Philippa: Geelong is an exciting new adventure! We relocated from England in 2014 following an Australian job opportunity for my husband. We fell in love with the area straight away, and having met so many great people, we feel right at home.

What are the stories of your careers?
Claire: I cooked in cafes and restaurants all over the world, and use those experiences as the inspiration for our Earth Angel Pantry creations. Philippa worked in England as a business analyst for large corporations such as Virgin and ITT. She takes care of the commercial side of Earth Angel Pantry.

What led you to starting your business?
Claire: We met in 2014 when our children started school at the same time and quickly became good friends. We were both interested in ‘clean’ eating and began swapping recipes. I felt there was a need for fresh, vegan and gluten-free foods in Geelong and suggested to Philippa that we start a market stall that was like an extension of our own kitchens.

Tell us about your product range
Earth Angel Pantry offers both staples — the Snappy Crackers and Happy Cookies are definitely popular — and a rotating product line based on seasonal produce. Everything that Earth Angel Pantry produces is handcrafted, vegan and gluten-free. We believe in food that is not only healthy and tasty but fulfilling and nurturing to your digestive system.
We've produced a seasonal market menu and we also offer a range of nutritious sweet treats like our Salted Tahini Cups.

Where can we find you?
You’ll find us at the Newtown Farmers Market on the last Saturday every month and Cowrie Market on the Torquay Esplanade on the third Sunday of each month from September to April.
Between markets,  our customers can place orders with us by phone or email and we deliver for free on orders over $50 in the Geelong area. Just choose your products from our website, drop us an email and we’ll do the rest!

We are also very excited to supply Fabretto Brothers Coffee Roasters on Pakington Street. They now stock our Happy Cookies, gluten-free sweet muffins and serve up our gluten-free granola with cashew nut yogurt and fresh berries

The Locavoriumalso includes our Snappy Crackers and Toasted Granola in their beautiful boutique hampers. We’re honoured to be alongside some of the region’s finest artisanal producers.

What do you love about your business?
We get so much pleasure watching people enjoy the creations from Earth Angel Pantry. We are equally passionate about the business of food being fun and nutritious and just a little bit naughty!

Market preparation days at Earth Angel Pantry HQ are full of baking, banter and the Bee Gees. Market days allow us to talk first-hand to their customers and find out what they love about the menu and to take requests.

The business also allows us to find the ideal work/life balance between being full-time mums and successful businesswomen. We feel blessed to have been embraced by the region and look forward to being able to provide them with more exciting food products for 2015.

Meet Local Obstetrician, Dr Saj

We recently had the pleasure of meeting Dr Sajeewa Rathnayake (aka Dr Saj).
After working in the public sector for his entire career (in which he has helped to bring more than 4,000 babies into the world), Dr Saj has recently started his own private practice in Geelong.
In short, he's delightful - warm, softly spoken with a big, easy smile.
We asked him if a private clinic would be easier on his time, and he replied 'In establishing my business, Geelong City Obstetrics and Gynaecology, I have committed to working or being on call for the next 2 years, 7 days a week. Knowing that I am always available is really important to my patients'. How could we not love that? Here's our chat. Janet.

Tell us about you and your family. How are you connected to Geelong?
I am married to Sumu and we have two young daughters, Yoshini and Yehali. We came to Australia from Sri Lanka, initially living in Brisbane where I worked and completed further qualifications in my field. We moved to Geelong in 2013 to take up a role at University Hospital.
I have just opened my private practice, and I hold a senior academic appointment at Deakin University, where I teach and assess medical students.
Geelong is a great place to raise a family - we fell in love with it straight away. We constantly meet great people here, and we feel very at home.

Why did you chose to become an Obstetrician?
It has always been my dream. I worked extremely hard to complete fellowships in two countries (Sri Lanka and Australia) to become an obstetric physician and a gynaecological surgeon. To me, it's the best career you can have!  There is nothing like helping a couple to go through their pregnancy and birth. Although we expect everything to go naturally, at times things can become a little more intense. This is when timely decisions and skills are required to help things go the way we want. I love that I can do this for my patients.

How many babies have you delivered?
If my memory is not wrong, the first baby I delivered was back in 2004,  when I was a resident. Since then, maybe over 4,000 babies came to this world with my support. Having said that, every pregnancy and every delivery is different. It's why Obstetrics is always fascinating!
Dr Saj and Office Manager, Katrina
How has Obstetrics changed over the course of your career?
Well, the basic principles or values of Obstetrics have not changed much. However, I think that we are more empowered with new, sophisticated knowledge and techniques. For example, there are new genetic screening methods to diagnose various medical problems which may affect babies. A few years ago we did not have these facilities, and at-risk mothers had to undergo very intense and difficult experiences. So as a whole I think pregnancy and childbirth are increasingly becoming safer, which is a great news for prospective mums and dads.

Have you noticed any changes in attitudes to birth over time from women themselves?
Yes, up up to a certain extent I think that perhaps things have become more medicalised. Technology has improved and it has created greater awareness of what’s happening. This is both good and bad. Some women are extremely anxious of what’s happening during the experience of birthing and some are amazingly ready to go! I think the issue of safety has become very important.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?
The most rewarding thing is witnessing pure happiness in people and their families. As I always say, there is nothing like helping a baby to see the light of this world,  especially when they are desperate for help, without which the outcome would be different.  My job doesn’t end there. As these young mums grow older with time (as I grow older too!), I will look after their gynaecological issues in a different capacity as a gynaecologist. Isn’t it amazing?

Tell us about your practice.
We are a very friendly, welcoming team at Geelong City Obstetrics and Gynaecology including myself, office manager Katrina and receptionist Abbie. We are very conveniently located at St John of God Specialist Centre, ensuring easy access to Hospital for me if I am needed in the birthing suite or theatre.

Our interest is in the safe care of women of all ages, and safe delivery of babies. The secret behind this is our passion and skills practising evidence-based medicine. We're all about providing maximum possible care with competence and compassion.

The Kitchen Garden Box

Got a little foodie in the family? Or would you like to start a family veggie garden, but don't have time? This lovely concept from local mum Kyrstie Barcak (also of the blog A Fresh Legacy) is just the trick - and it would make a fab Xmas present. We caught up with Kyrstie to hearmore.

Tell us about you and your family and your career.
Our family moved to Highton almost five years ago from Melbourne.
I have a background working for large corporate organisations on large programs of change, such as a merger or the introduction of new technology.
When I my second son was born I turned my passion for gardening and fresh food into my career. I started A Fresh Legacy, a food and garden blog to inspire and help families to start their own vegetable garden and enjoy fresh healthy food.

You’ve been blogging for a long time at A Fresh Legacy - tell us about it.
I believe that everyone can grow just one thing at home and have a positive impact on their lifestyle. I am passionate about helping and inspiring other families to experience this.
Growing fresh food at home has taken my family on a journey that has changed the way that we source, prepare, plan and enjoy our meals.
A Fresh Legacy has introduced me to an online community of vegetable gardeners and food lovers.  It has put me in contact with many of our region's wonderful local producers, farmers, organisations, brands and groups that I would not otherwise have had the chance to experience or to share with so many other people.

How has it evolved over time?
A Fresh Legacy was launched in 2011 and mostly featured family based recipes. Since then I have become a little better at taking photographs of the recipes!
A Fresh Legacy has evolved as our family and life has. As we developed our backyard and vegetable gardening space I have shared that with my community.  I have been fortunate enough to create recipes for some of Australia’s leading food brands and have met some amazing people who have inspired, influenced and taught me a lot.
As I have learned more about my community and what they are interested in and need help with I have modified the content focus a little. This year I have created and launched a product that allows me to share my knowledge in a tangible way, rather than it all being online. My first book, due for release in March 2016 will also do this.  These things have all evolved from A Fresh Legacy and the community that has grown around it.

What has been most challenging about fitting in A Fresh Legacy, family and other commitments?
I would happily garden, cook and write about both those things 24 hours a day.  It doesn’t seem like work to me. Gardening and cooking are part of our regular routine. Squeezing in the writing of my book in the last few months was a challenge. It involved late nights, full days on the weekends and my parents and in-laws assisted by visiting for periods of time and looking after the kids so I could focus on writing.

The other main challenge presents itself in Winter when I need to photograph a recipe. It gets dark early and artificial indoor light is not great for food photography. This means that when I am developing a recipe I need to organise the day around getting it cooked and photographed early in the day. Some things, such as fish, are not great when they are reheated and so the family does not always get the greatest meal by the time it is served after being photographed!

Tell us about your latest project.
I have just created and launched the Kitchen Garden Box. It is designed for busy mums to help them start their own family vegetable garden.
The Kitchen Garden Box includes certified organic seeds, growing notes, plant tags, recipes and a heap of additional resources including a year’s email support and bonus downloads. It is a complete fresh food experience from planting, growing, harvesting and cooking.
Spring is the best time of year to start your vegetable garden – I would love for more local families to start theirs and enjoy the fresh harvests on their meal tables. Join us and start yours this weekend! It is easier, and takes less time than you may think.

Wind In The Willows

Last night we were lucky to attend the opening night of Wind In The Willows in Melbourne's Botanical Gardens. Our 3 year old twins are huge fans of the Monty Python movie, and we were certain that this would give them both a very memorable first theatre experience. We weren't wrong!
The show is nothing short of delightful. The first act is staged in front of the lake, where 'messing about in boats' could be demonstrated to great effect. The audience (who were designated 'rabbits') became part of the show via singing and clever questions-and-answers with the cast. The characters were larger-than-life, funny and very engaging.

The second act was in the 'wild wood' - a short walk up the hill and behind some trees. The audience was happy to decamp to it - everyone was in high spirits, and keen to take part in the adventure. Half way through the act, the children of the audience were split up into big and little rabbits, where they took great joy in running through the wood, looking for the little otters.
As a family, we loved it. It was quite obvious that all the other rabbits enjoyed it too. If you've got some time over the school holidays, it's well worth a trip up the highway to take part in this magical production.

Location: The Royal Botanic Gardens, Enter via Gate F, Birdwood Avenue
Dates: 6-23 January, at 10.30am or 6pm.
Cost: $25 per standard ticket, or $90 for a family of four.
Good to know: Bring a picnic, a rug, hat and sunscreen.

Lets Go Outside With Bianca Ebeling

We love the ingenuity and persistence of this local mum! When Bianca Ebeling learned that babies can't see anything other than high contrast (and she couldn't find a black and white baby book) she decided to write her own. Today, 'Lets Go Outside' is provided to every newborn in the Bendigo district to promote early literacy skills. Here's our chat:

Bianca, tell us about you, your family and your career.
I have lived all over the place – born in Melbourne, raised in Jindabyne (Snowy Mountains, NSW) for 8 years and then moved to Warsaw, Poland for 10 years. I came back to Australia to go to University in Canberra where I studied Finance. To celebrate completing the degree successfully a friend and I went on a tour to New Zealand – that is where I met my husband which ultimately led me to moving to Melbourne, and now we are here in Geelong.Since completing my degree I have always worked in Finance however outside of work I have always been (or tried to be) very creative. Publishing my own book ‘Let’s Go Outside’ has been very fulfilling on the creative side and I am constantly thinking about new ideas for my little business.

We have a gorgeous little boy who is now 17 months and it is simply a joy to watch him grow up and discover the world. We also have another little one on the way, due in May.

How are you connected to Geelong?
My husband and I moved to Geelong 4 years ago from Melbourne as we wanted to live in a more family friendly town that was beautiful and affordable yet still close to Melbourne. Geelong fit the bill perfectly. It is one of the best decisions we have ever made.

Tell us about Lets Go Outside - how did it come about? During my mother’s group we had a session with the local librarian (in Geelong West) who explained the developmental importance of black and white books for a baby between the age of 0-6 months. She explained the importance of reading to our little ones from the day they are born and what books are most appropriate for different age groups. Interestingly, babies up until the age of 6 months cannot see the pretty pastel colours that the world tends to associate with babies and parents surround their babies with. I experienced first-hand the benefits of black and white with my baby when he was younger with a black and white book from the local library but I also wish I could have purchased one in his very early days to have one permanently at home. The librarian also mentioned that these books are very hard to come by in Australia and I confirmed that by going to many stores in the region and not being able to find one. Many store holders didn’t even know what I was talking about regarding black and white. This is how this book came into fruition.

Let’s Go Outside is a black and white board book for babies aged 0-6 months. It has a range of pictures with an outdoors theme however there are no words so the sky is the limit for each parent/carer on what story they wish to tell their little one about the pictures. Some parents tell their baby what is on the page, whilst others might tell a story about a day at the beach, or if daddy proposed to mummy in a hot air balloon.
Some of the benefits I witnessed with the book and my little one were: it soothed and relaxed him when he was overstimulated and getting upset, it increased his tummy time significantly as he was so keen to lift his head to see the pictures, it provided him with a stimulating activity while I was cooking or doing some house chores, it aided our bond in those early weeks by just snuggling together and going through the book which captivated him.

How has it been received so far?
The book has been really positively received by maternal nurses, librarians, speech pathologists, hospitals, and of course new parents. Bendigo Health now give a copy of 'Let's Go Outside' to every newborn in their district to promote early literacy skills. I recently received an email from the Chief Speech Pathologist at Bendigo Hospital saying ”As a speech pathologist working in this area, your book provides all the elements I look for when recommending a starting point for parents with newborns. The black and white contrast stimulates baby’s visual focus and allows parents to share attention with their baby. The fact that there are no written words makes the book so much more accessible for parents and carers no matter what their own literacy levels. Anyone can ‘talk’ to the book. Shared attention and enjoyment with talking are the first steps to language and communication.”

Another mum has told me that her little one had mild flat head syndrome and through the use of this book she encouraged her baby to turn their head to the other side which reduced the flat head.

Can you share a tip for other mums: How are you juggling work/family?
Haha, I think I might need the tips for this one. I know I could definitely do better, but I think it all comes down to prioritisation. When I first had my baby, and in all honesty I wasn’t coping that well, a friend showed me a diagram of a triangle saying you can only pick 2 of the 3 options. The options were: clean house, your sanity, happy baby. It was something so simple, yet so effective. I felt like it gave me the right not to constantly try to be super mum (at which I was failing anyway) and by letting go of some things, it made everything easier and enjoyable again.
Also, if someone offers help, TAKE IT! It took me a while to learn that, but that is really what helps me juggle my work and family life now.

What is your favourite Geelong haunt?
We have recently reached the age with our son where he just loves playgrounds. We recently moved from Manifold Heights to Highton so we are having fun exploring our new area, however we used to always go to Sparrow Park in Geelong West where there is a fantastic playground, a park and BBQ facilities.

Finally, where can we buy Lets Go Outside, and the price?
Let’s go outside is available online at www.mylittlebookywooky.com for $15.00 with free postage Australia-wide. Alternatively you can purchase it at Paton Books (Pakington St, Newtown) and Grandma’s Bottom Drawer (Garden St, East Geelong).
